چکیده :

Purpose of this research paper is Identification of the serial status of bibliographical records in the catalog of Iran’s National Library and Archives in terms of level and accuracy of stored data as well as the types of data entry errors. This study is a survey with a descriptive-analytical approach. The population includes the full worksheets of serials in Persian language in Rasa software—library management software used in the National Library of Iran (NLI). 375 out of a total of 12700 worksheets have been selected as the sample and these records include 25125 fields. Data are collected using a checklist made according to the UNIMARC guidelines for serial cataloging. Findings: Only 12% of the studied fields contain data, and 65% of the data have been entered correctly. Most of the errors are related to the use of non-Unicode characters (49%), followed by authorization errors (33%). Cataloger error was 11.5% in field choice, 4% in extra characters and/or words, 2% in incomplete data, and about 0.5%in spelling. Conclusions: Lack of a well-defined policy for cataloging and low cataloger accuracy are the main reasons for the data lacking in the serial records of NLI. One recommendation from this study is for NLI staff to pay special attention to serials cataloging and develop comprehensive guidelines in this area.
