چکیده :

Use of Tire-Derived Aggregates (TDA) in different geotechnical applications such as embankment, retaining wall, and landfill has been highlighted in the literature. This lies behind the fact that use of TDA as a lightweight, high permeable material is much more economic than other usual materials such as sand. Apart from that, in terms of environmental and human health issues the use of scrap tires is strongly advisable. The effect of TDA on specific gravity of Kaolin is investigated in this paper. A number of 26 specific gravity tests on Kaolin-TDA mixture using both water pycnometer and alcohol pycnometer were conducted. Results show that the lower specific gravity is expected when either there is an increase in TDA percentage of mixture or decrease in size of TDA. In addition, it is observed that use of water pycnometer is misleading for specific gravity determination of Kaolin-TDA mixture, more specifically in case of powdery TDA. Hence, use of ethyl alcohol pycnometer is suggested. A correlation between specific gravity obtained using water pycnometer and alcohol pycnometer is presented which can be applied when use of ethyl alcohol pycnometer is not interested.
