چکیده :

History is full of examples concerning conflicts over water, or water wars, metaphorically. This paper reviews water wars from the first recorded battle to modern-time warfare, with the hope of finding a remedy for this social blight. To this end, a brief chronicle review of water resources conflicts over the worlds illustrated that while social, economic, cultural, and political aspects of the world have changed through time, the core concepts of water conflicts stayed more or less the same. The review over the most important historically documented evidence suggests that such conflicts may have two basic reasons, and for each, a general remedy is suggested. First, some conflicts arise from the avarice nature of humanity. These sorts of conflicts require a strong yet fair middle man, respected by both sides of the conflict to end the dispute. The evidence also suggests that today, the United Nation (UN) has the potential to play such a role. Secondly, some conflicts occur to ensure a nation’s safe water supply. In such cases, which mainly occur in areas with less developed countries, it is advisable that more developed countries use the economic dimension of water to mitigate the created tension. Evidently, a controlled and slow shift toward an industry-based economy, instead of an agricultural one, could help thewater-stressed nations to preserve a considerable amount of water supply, while maintaining their financial revenue.
