There is no easy and cheap method to determine methanol content of beverages. Having access to such a method may reduce the frequency of methanol poisoning. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a newly self-designed kit in determination of methanol content of samples with known methanol levels (using add found technique). As a second aim, we evaluated methanol concentration of some alcoholic beverages in the Iranian black market and compared it with the EU standards. A new modified chromotropic acid method was used to determine methanol content in real and artificial (self-made) samples. The quantification limit of this method lies below the permitted and safe content of methanol in the beverages regulated by the European Parliament and the Council. Based on our results, almost all local homemade liquors had a methanol content more than the European standard (4000 mg/L). The new chemical method could easily determine methanol contents of more than 1250 mg/L. As a conclusion, in contrast to the commercial liquors, almost all homemade liquors had a high content of methanol. Application of the new modified chromotropic acid method is practical to rapidly, easily, and accurately measure methanol content of the alcoholic drinks.
