PREVALENCE OF OBESITY IN PATIENTS SUFFERING FROM HYPERCHOLESTEROLEMIA

Introduction & purpose: Reports show that in U.S.A. more than 65% & in Iran about 33.5% of people are obese. The aim of this study to determine the prevalence of obesity in patients suffering from hypercholesterolemia referred to the Shahid Mofateh clinic of Yasuj city. Material & methods: This research is descriptive-sectional study. The samples were consisting of 96 patients & data collection was done by a questionnaire consisting of demographic characteristics of patients & also their height, weight, BMI, the level of different types of blood lipids & some questions regarding their life style (diet & walking). Findings: The mean of total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C & triglyceride of samples were 237.25_+35.5, 162.2 _+38.8, 23.7_+9.2 &254.5_+13.6 respectively. The BMI of samples were also medium (18.8%), obese (47.9%) & very obese (33.3%). Regarding the rate of diet & walking, complete observance, incomplete &non-observance groups allocated 51%, 41.7% & 7.3% respectively . Also most of women belonged to very obese group significantly (P=0.000).Else results showed a significant relation between age &BMI (P=0.07). Discussion & conclusion: With proper & permanent education regarding the life style specially to the obese females (considering the high prevalence),we can take a positive step in reducing obesity & blood lipid which are main factors of cardio-vascular diseases .
